Duke's Second Chance

IMG_3141_edited.jpg

Some stories remind us why animal rescue matters. Duke's story is one of them. In September 2025, Duke, a Cane Corso/Great Dane mix, was found wandering the streets of El Cajon. When he arrived at the ranch, he weighed only 70 pounds—far below what a dog of his size should weigh. His spine and hips protruded through his skin, and it was clear he had been struggling to survive for quite some time.

A veterinary examination revealed that Duke's stomach was filled with sticks and rocks, a heartbreaking sign of the lengths he had gone to in an attempt to satisfy his hunger. Despite his condition, Duke never lost his gentle nature.

From the very beginning, he showed a calm and affectionate personality. With proper nutrition, veterinary care, and a safe place to call home, Duke slowly began to recover. Day by day, he grew stronger, healthier, and more confident.

Today, less than a year later, Duke weighs a healthy 120 pounds. The once-emaciated dog has transformed into a powerful and handsome giant with a heart to match his size.

While his appearance may be imposing, Duke is one of the gentlest animals on the ranch. He enjoys lounging with his family, cooling off in the pool during warm summer days, and accompanying us on walks. He has also naturally taken on the role of ranch protector, always keeping a watchful eye on the animals and the property.

Duke's journey is proof that with compassion, patience, and proper care, even the most difficult beginnings can lead to incredible outcomes.

Every day, Duke reminds us why we open our hearts and our home to animals in need.

A second chance made all the difference.
